Cross-party leaders on Saturdaty met under Yashwant Sinha’s Rashtra Manch banner, a political action group, and unanimously agreed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to be drubbed in the next general election to save democracy, the country, and its Constitution.

Yashwant Sinha, former finance minister and sometime member of BJP’s Margdarshak Mandal; Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra’s former chief minister; Dinesh Trivedi, former railways minister and Trinamool Congress leader; NCP MP Majid Memon, Congress MP Kumar Ketkar, former MPs Pritish Nandy and Nana Patole and disgruntled BJP legislator Ashish Deshmukh met to prepare a road map to mobilise public support by organising rallies and agitations against Modi’s “dictatorial” style of functioning, economic chaos, farmers’ plight,  and crony capitalism.

The front decided that Modi and his party have to be defeated in Karnataka polls to check their victory march.

At the beginning of the meeting, Sinha said it was time to choose between the nation and the family.  “It is not the BJP of AB Vajpayee and LK Advani. The party is run by Modi and Amit Shah duo,’’ Sinha said. He however, clarified that he continues to be part of the BJP.

Chavan told DNA, “It is difficult to separate Modi and RSS ideology. There are serious concerns about the way Modi is running the country. He needs to be stopped as democracy in under threat. If he wins in 2019, there won’t be elections, democracy or a Constitution. The decision was taken to fight subversion of institutions, bumbling economic policy, corruption, farmers’ neglect, and physical elimination of people.” He said Rashtra Manch has also decided to press for a return to paper ballot from EVMs.

Memon said the front will also take up the issue of the independence of the judiciary,  Election Commission and media. “A core committee has been formed under the chairmanship of  Sudheendra Kulkarni, who had opposed the name of Modi as the BJP’s PM candidate,’’ he added.

Protests In May

Rashtra Manch will organise a public meeting at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on May 1, a protest march in Kollahpur, and a sit-in protest in Akola, on farmers’ issues.
