Doctors at the Wockhardt hospital in Mumbai Central performed a liver transplant on nine-month-old Kavya and saved his life. Kavya underwent the surgery, with a part of the liver being donated by his mother on June 14, which lasted for 14 hours. He is claimed to be the youngest infant to go through a successful liver transplant surgery in entire western India.

Vivek and Nisha Raut’s son, belonging from Gholwad village of Palghar district, was born with a disease known as Biliary Atresia. He underwent some major surgeries at a very early age which left his liver with permanent irreversible damage.

“We started treating Kavya when he was 6 months old. He had developed Cirrhosis of liver and he had stopped growing and weighed only 5.6 kgs. With medical measures, we tried to stabilize him and let him put on some weight. But he landed with infections and the only treatment left with us was a timely transplant” said Dr. Lalit Verma, Consultant Pediatric Hepatologist at the hospital.

“Liver transplantation in children less than 10 kg is challenging. Kavya already underwent Porto-enterostomy, where his small, large intestines were stuck with the liver. We had to carefully separate adhesions, ensuring there is no damage to the intestines. After that, we took a small portion of the mother’s liver, weighing 260 gm, which was again large for the child. We further reduced harvested liver to 210 gm and then implanted it on Kavya’s body. The liver turned pink and started working,” said Dr Anurag Shrimal, Consultant Abdominal Organ Transplantation and HPB surgeon.
