As part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's plan to beautify Marine Drive, the civic body will be putting up street lights uniformly along the promenade, especially along the few dark stretches. The request was also made by Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria in a recent coordination meeting with civic commissioner Sitaram Kunte and four additional municipal commissioners.

In the meeting, Maria had asked Kunte to ensure that BMC puts up proper lighting along the promenade at Marine Drive. According to Maria, the suggestion was aimed at not only beautifying the promenade but also for the safety of the thousands of visitors who throng the place everyday.

"Marine Drive is an important landmark of the city and it is important is stays that way. In the recent meeting with municipal commissioner, I suggested there should be proper lighting along the promenade, especially the stretch between Mafatlal Baug and NCPA," Maria said.

He added that this will also ensure women's safety there.

"There are some points along the promenade which are dark during late evening. This can bring up safety concerns for women. Hence, proper lighting at the promenade is needed," he said.

Maria added that Kunte has assured him it will be done as per Marine Drive's décor.

Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said, "We had recently put up lights on the Princess Street flyover, which was a dark patch. As part of the promenade's beautification plan, we will be putting up street lights there with a high lux level."

Andheri corporator Ameet Satam, who was on a hunger strike to demand better street lighting, said, "Not only Marine Drive, the entire city needs better lighting. I have a sample study report of 107 streets where as many as 100 have a negative illumination level. As per the MMC Act, it is important for civic authorities to provide adequate illumination to the city, which BMC has failed to."
