The futuristic trains that are likely to replace Rajdhani and Shatabdi are going to be maintained at this sprawling shed in far suburbs of Nallasopara-Virar. It will be the first shed across Indian Railways that has been selected as Western Railway is likely to operate ‘Train-sets’ also called ‘T-20’ trains from Mumbai.

Senior railway officials said that they are hoping to run these T-20 trains on Mumbai-Delhi route. In fact there was a meeting earlier last month with the Railway Board officials in Mumbai, to discuss the same. At present maintenance works of local trains are carried out apart from its parking. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation has built it at a cost of around Rs 350 crore.

These trains are similar to our local trains known as EMUs which doesn’t need locomotives and power cars to run and are self-propelled. It can touch speeds varying from 160-200kmph.

“As of now, it has been decided that T-20s will be maintained at Virar carshed. There is ample space created for the same purpose which at present is lying unused,” said a senior railway official on condition of anonymity.

The Integral Coach Factory, Chennai will be manufacturing them and for the same had called global tenders. The approximate cost is around Rs 2700 crore. As of now manufacturers haven’t come forth and so the Indian Railways are likely to miss the 2020 deadline.

There shall be 14 train sets of 20 coaches each. They shall manufacture a total of 291 coaches. The aluminium-bodied train sets will be energy efficient, their machines would be below the coaches and shall have automatic doors. There shall be AC chair car and sleeper coaches that shall include 1st class, AC-2 tier and AC-3 tier.
