Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray slammed the Election Commission of India (EC) on Wednesday for conducting the Maharashtra assembly polls when the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali are around the corner.

Addressing his second rally in Vidharbha's Yavatmal district, Thackeray demanded, "Was there any need to conduct elections when festivals are going on? Wouldn't have it been possible for the Commission to hold polls after the Diwali festival?"

Thackeray  further said, "If there were elections in West Bengal, all parties would have come forward asking commission to postpone the polls. But our politicians don't even bother to keep tradition intact."

Slamming the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congres and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for breaking their alliances ahead of the elections, he said, "Even while the polls were just weeks away, political parties, who were together for decades broke the alliances for few seats. Rather than concentrating on issues of farmers, women, employment and suicides, politicians were busy fighting for seats."

Thackeray also blamed Shiv Sena and the BJP for not being the strong opposition, saying that because of them Congress-NCP could rule the state for 15 years.

Stating that there is an internal setting among the political parties including the opposition and the ruling government, he said, "Elected representatives from the constituencies stay in Mumbai and come to the region only when the elections are around. But only the dead bodies are left in the state to watch the tamasha (drama). We don't even ask questions to our MPs and MLAs."

Citing how people and partymen stood by J Jayalalitha, Thackeray said, "Whatever may have happened to J Jayalalitha, but their partymen and the newly appointed chief minister were crying while taking oath. The whole film industry supported her. But did anyone cry when Ashok Chavan's name appeared in Adarsh Scam?"

"There are jobs in every nook and corner of the state, but you are not getting it as outsiders are being appointed. What are the expectations of the people? Water, electricity and good roads. Can't we even full fill that?. If voted to power, I assure I will make drought history," he added.
