Rainwater harvesting reaping benefits for Puneites

As many as 12,000 Puneites have received a rebate of Rs43.48 lakh on their property tax for installing rainwater harvesting systems (RWH) in their societies or individual dwelling units in the city in the last three years.

As many as 12,000 Puneites have received a rebate of Rs43.48 lakh on their property tax for installing rainwater harvesting systems (RWH) in their societies or individual dwelling units in the city in the last three years.

Disclosing this information to DNA on Saturday, Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) environment officer, Mangesh Dighe, said that the concept was becoming popular in the city.

Dighe said, “In the initial days we could literally count the people using RWH systems on our fingertips. However, the last three years has seen as many as 12,000 people getting rebate amounting to Rs43.48 lakh for installing the system in their societies. Awareness on rain water harvesting has been on a rise lately.”

According to Dighe, the PMC gives a 5% rebate on property tax to citizens on each of the following initiatives which include, rainwater harvesting, wet waste composting and installation of solar panels to save electricity.
