More than 500 societies in Thane, Mumbai are using the rainwater through the technique of rainwater harvesting, according to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
To conserve water, TMC had offered a 5% tax rebate to residents adopting the method of rainwater harvesting. This method has been made mandatory for all new buildings that are being constructed in the area. Speaking to iamin, an engineer in the water supply department of TMC, shared that they have fixed three officials who provide details and technical support about rainwater harvesting to the residents who are interested. He also added that TMC started promoting the system in 2008 and so far around 500 societies have executed the system in their premises.
The corporation believes that this will go a long way in preventing the crisis of water scarcity, especially in the dry summer months. Rainwater harvesting is also being heavily promoted by the Pune and Bangalore municipal corporations.
