A junior college student, who met with a road accident on July 3, the day the city was inundated with heavy rains, has been undergoing multiple surgeries and procedures almost daily, the doctors said. Aishwarya Vanjare, 17, was returning from her college to her home in Santacruz through the waterlogged streets when a bus ran over her leg.

Passersby took her to a nearby hospital, while a pedestrian informed her grandmother, Shakuntala Vanjare, via a phone call about the mishap. Aishwarya lost her parents when she was a child and has since been staying with her grandmother.

Talking about the difficulty the family is facing because Aishwarya lost the golden hour of treatment to apathy, Shakuntala said, "While the pedestrian immediately took her to two nearby hospitals in Santacruz, they refused to treat her after seeing her condition. Later on, I took her to a municipal hospital, but they stated that they didn't have medical equipment to treat her. Finally, I brought her to Nanavati Hospital."

Explaining her medical state, Dr Sunil Shahane, senior consultant and orthopaedic surgeon at Nanavati said, "She had suffered injuries in the lower left limb, near the pelvic region, which has suffered a fracture. We have been conducting procedures on her daily. The infection was spreading for the first few days, but due to regular dressing, her wound is improving. After consultation with the gynaecologist and general physician, we are sure the injuries won't harm her reproductive system. She will take more than six weeks to recover from the injuries."

Aishwarya has been admitted to the hospital, run by a charitable trust, as it reserves 10 per cent of its beds for underprivileged patients. The cost of her treatment has run into a lakh already. Shakuntala, who earns Rs 7,000 a month as domestic help, is not able to bear the expenses. "Since her accident, I have not gone to work at all," she said.
