Expecting large-scale private sector participation in passenger, freight and port railway operations in the next few years, the railways has taken the first step to ensure that qualified people are available for these firms, as and when they come up.

In what the railways called a significant move in professional enrichment of its manpower, it announced that it has plans to send its officers to pursue MBA in fields related to railways. Accordingly, the National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR), Vadodara, which is the apex training institute of Indian Railways, has signed an MoU with Maharaja Sayajirao (MS) University, Vadodara. The first of these courses is expected to start in August itself, officials said.

The probationary officials being chosen for this project will be from the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS), officials said.

"Railway probationary officers who are currently being trained at NAIR will study and get MBA degree from the MS University with specialisation in respective fields such as finance, human resource management, production and operations management and marketing management," said a railway ministry official.

The move has wider implications as well, officials pointed out. The MS University can select students at their end as well for the course. "Armed with a management degree in railway disciplines, these students can be of great help in railway-related infrastructural projects," an official said.

As part of its turnaround plans, the railways will partner with private firms to connect ports, collieries and power plants; partner with state governments to build passenger lines in respective states and also to provide manpower to various metro lines coming up in Tier-1 and Tier 2 cities.

"It is a pragmatic move to create a qualified human resource environment for private railway infrastructure to thrive," an official said.
