The railway ministry has set targets for various train brands that railway minister Suresh Prabhu announced during his railway budget speech in Parliament on February 25 this year.

This includes the Tejas, Uday double-decker and Humsfar brand for reserved travel and Antyodaya and Deendayalu brand for unreserved passengers. The railway ministry has told the chief mechanical engineers of various railway workshops and production units, where these rakes will be built, to review the progress of the construction of these rakes.

As reported by dna in its June 30 edition, the Tejas brand has already missed its June 30 target with officials now saying that it is likely to be rolled off from the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala-Punjab in August this year. All the brands are being targeted for roll-off by December 31 this year, said railway officials.

According to officials, the deadline for the first rake of the Antyodaya brand is September 30, for the Deendayalu brand it's October 30 and for the double-decker Uday it is December 31. However, the railway's most ambitious offering, a SMART coach, has been given a target of January 31, 2017.

The Smart coach — acronym for Specially Modified Aesthetic Refreshing Travel — will have some never-before features, including personal entertainment screens on each seat and LED boards that will beam advertisements inside the compartments. According to officials, the coaches will have metro-style automatic doors, vending machines, new type of seats and bio-vacuum toilets.

According to officials special emphasis is being laid on the design of the Antyodaya and Deendayalu brands, as both cater to the lower hierarchy of train travellers who so far have been offered comfort-less cattle-class commutes. The Deendayalu coaches will have facility for potable drinking water, toilets and a higher number of mobile charging points. The Antyodaya Express, a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, for the common man will be operated on dense routes and will have vestibules to connect all the coaches.

The Humsfar brand rake has already been rolled out from RCF-Kapurthala on June 15 this year. It is a fully 3AC train with newer types of toilets and LED lights for energy-savings.

Deadline set for various new train brands:

Antyodaya Express first rake- September 30, 2016
Deendayalu coaches- October 30, 2016
Tejas first rake- June 30, 2016
Uday double-decker first rake- December 31, 2016
Smart coach rake- January 31, 2017
