Central Railway has asked the BMC to design the road overbridge over Vidyavihar station in a way that it provides an opportunity to construct an elevated road from Vidyavihar station to Kurla terminus.

The proposed elevated road, as per preliminary designs of the railways, will run along the eastern flank of Vidyavihar station - where the railways has considerable land parcels, will go all the way to the terminus.

"In the years to come, we believe Kurla terminus will outstrip CST in importance as far as long-distance trains are concerned. The Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road will help get people to the Eastern Express Highway and also to the western suburbs quickly. This elevated road could also allow motorists to get to LBS through Vidyavihar quickly," said senior railway officials.

"The terminus will have more trains in the future and it is best to prepare for it now. The railway land on the eastern part of Vidyavihar is un-encroached for the moment. It is best to use it for constructive purposes rather than let it get encroached," said an official.

The Rajawadi-Pipeline road currently connects Vidyavihar station to Kurla Terminus but the road is narrow and is heavily encroached on both the sides and the BMC's efforts to clear the encroachments have not been successful.

As reported earlier by dna, the BMC and CR are jointly building a road overbridge across Vidyavihar- 200 metres long and 15 metres wide -- with the bridge connecting station road in the east with Kirol road in the west. The railways is expected to build the part of the bridge going over its territory. The preliminary design that the railways has given to the BMC emphasis on a cable-stayed bridge over Vidyavihasr.

According to officials in the know, the cable-stayed design is the one they are veering to most because of the technical complications involved at Vidyavihar. The station has a total of 11 sets of tracks and the distance between the first set - the slow line that runs along platform No 1 - and the 11th set is a good 200 metres long. The complications don't permit the construction of too many pillars between the tracks.
