There is good news for Mumbai rail commuters as sufficient funds have been provided for improving the suburban rail system and its expansion. The Indian Railways have been allotted Rs 579 crore for various phases of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) in the General Budget. This not only include funds for those rail lines whose work is ongoing for over a decade; but also those that will lead to expansion of suburban rail. All these projects fall under various phases of MUTP. With this, the balance half of Rs 579 crore will now be provided by Maharashtra government.

To begin with for the first time, the MUTP-3A - which is pegged at Rs 54777 crore - has received funds to the tune of Rs 50 crore. These include new rail corridors of a fast line between CSMT-Panvel, Panvel-Virar, extending harbour line on Goregaon-Borivali stretch, five-six lines on Borivali-Virar, three-four lines on Kalyan-Badlapur and fourth line on Kalyan-Asangaon. It is touted to be the largest funded rail project ever in the history.

"Provision made in the budget means that this project shall become a reality. The MUTP-3A is expected to get clearance from the Cabinet of Ministers in this month. This is the last stage and after this we can begin work on this multi-crore project," said a senior railway official.

Even those projects that have been going on for over a decade under MUTP-2 has received funds of Rs 245 crore. These include Thane-Diva five-six lines, sixth line between Mumbai Central-Borivali and five-six lines between Kurla-CSMT. All these lines will segregate suburban trains from long distance ones.

Also MUTP-3 has got Rs 284 crore. This will be in addition to Rs 519 crore that it received last year in the budget. On February 1, DNA reported how Rs 519 crore given under MUTP-3 has not been utilised yet. It also includes Rs 5 crore for increasing the number of coaches on harbour line to 12-car.
