Railway authorities to carry out 'Zero Accident Mission' in Mumbai

With more than 2,000 people losing their lives in the past eight months along the suburban lines in the city, the programme powered by central ministry has been formulated keeping the day-to-day train accidents in consideration that have occurred.

Taking cognizance of the rising death toll of commuters along the suburban train lines in Mumbai, railway authorities have decided to implement a new proactive programme to save lives.

With more than 2,000 people losing their lives in the past eight months along the suburban lines in the city, the programme powered by central ministry has been formulated keeping the day-to-day train accidents in consideration that have occurred.

Speaking with iamin, a senior central railway official said, "The programme has been formulated after the central railway board expressed shock over the rising death toll in the city. It involves several activities including sensitisation of commuters breaking train travelling rules like rooftop riding or track-crossing," said. He added that the railway board was shocked over the 74 death incidents in the past one week along the three lines.

The programme - Zero Accident Mission - will be initiated across all the three suburban lines of Western, Central and Harbour line that is meant to primarily curtail the death toll, which seems to be spiralling every month. As per the railway record, 68 men and six women died at different locations in Mumbai, between August 24 to 30, along the three suburban lines - Western, Central and Harbour.

The stations where most of these accidents took place are CST, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Nalasopara, Virar, Palghar, Kurla, Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan and Karjat.

Speaking to iamin, government railway police (GRP) commissioner Madhukar Pandey said, "Railways is working towards a safe commute programme. The intention is not only to reduce the train accidents, but also to sensitise commuters at large."
