In a bid to quell factionalism and dissent in its party unit in Maharashtra, the Congress party plans to organise 10 poll rallies by its president Rahul Gandhi, four meetings by general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and two by former president Sonia Gandhi during the four-phase polling in the state. Insiders believe that rallies by the trio will not only help bury hatchets but also help put up a show of unity much needed to take on a formidable looking BJP-Shiv Sena combine.

Rahul has already launched the Lok Sabha poll campaign by addressing Congress party's erstwhile pocket borough Dhule and also in Mumbai on March 1. Sonia Gandhi will share the dais with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and leaders from the Mahagathbandhan.

State party executive member and a former minister said,'' The state unit has already made a formal request to the trio and based on their availability, meetings will be organised. These rallies are quite crucial as they will help lure traditional vote bank and youth in particular especially when BJP is engaged in promoting a culture of defection.'' He informed that despite dissent and disappointment by a section of party workers the state unit is hopeful to cash in on BJP government's anti-incumbency while effectively marketing Congress party's pro farmers, pro-poor and development plank.

Another party leader hoped that the party will improve its tally in the coming elections by effectively taking up a range of issues raised by Congress President such as Rafale deal, lack of jobs, and attack on democratic institutions and divisive politics played by the BJP. ''Congress president has announced ambitious minimum income guarantee scheme which will be prominently highlighted in the ensuing rallies,'' he noted.

Congress is contesting on 24 seats while it has spared two seats to ally Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana and Bahujan Vikas Aghadi.
