Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi arrived at Nagpur on Wednesday night to start his two-day Maharashtra visit in which he will launch his padyatra and meet family members of the farmers from Amravati division in Vidarbha who have committed suicide.

Gandhi will reach Amravati on Thursday morning by road and start his march. He plans to walk 15 kilometres to visit five villages which have seen 295 farmer suicides between January and April.

Gandhi will visit Gunji, Shahapur, Ramgaon, Rajna and Tongalabad in Dhamangaon railway tehsil and Chandur railway tehsil. He will interact with the family members of the deceased farmers.

Congress state unit president Ashok Chavan said the party will press for a complete loan waiver for the distressed farmers. He said whether it is the Centre or the state, "there is no seriousness towards the grave situation of the farmers".

Informing about Gandhi's visit, Chavan said it was not aimed at criticising prime minister Narendra Modi but to give a wake-up call to the union government, which, he said, was not serious about farmers' issues.

Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik, AICC in-charge of Maharashtra Mohan Prakash, state unit president Ashok Chavan, and leader of opposition in the state assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, welcomed Gandhi in Nagpur on his arrival.
