The holy Quran calligraphed by Saint Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahimi will be put on display on the night of June 14. The annual event will be held between Thursday 10 pm to Friday 1.45 am this year. Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahimi (1372 to 1431 A.D) is a revered figure in Mumbai and thousands of people, regardless of their religion, pay their respects at his grave daily in the Mahim dargah.
"We call it Ziyarat of the Quran Sharif written by Makhdoom Shah Baba. Every year, it is put on display on the 28th day or 29th day of Roza. This has been going on for over 50 years now. The saint is believed to have written the Quran over 630 years ago. He had written it in Arabic with a detailed explanation of certain Persian words. The print looks fresh, and the paper has not become brittle either. It is miraculous. We make sure it is always kept in the sanctum sanctorum," said Sohail Khandwani, managing trustee of Pir Makhdum Saheb Charitable Trust.
The Sufi saint is said to have lived during the rule of the Tuglaq dynasty and Sultan Ahmed Shah of Gujarat. His mortal remains are buried next to his mother's, and it is called the 'Qutb-E-Kokan'.
He was known for his popularity among the security forces in those days. This explains why the first sandal offered to the saint during the annual fair always comes from a policeman. One of the anecdotes narrates how the saint was close to the police and often helped them, while the other states he was offered his last sip of water by a police personnel.
