Despite increased patrolling, Marine Drive continues to be a favourite destination for reckless bikers and car drivers.
Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region) had started a drive against against errant motorists who sped and raced on Marine Drive a few months back. The effort has seen only a minor drop in the number of incidents.
"Mostly bikers are a menace in this area. We try to keep a close watch on them but the entire stretch is too long. Taking advantage of this the bikers go to places where police patrolling vans are not there or have just left. Bikers perform stunt as they have an audience there. While doing so they risk their lives and that of innocent pedestrians and motorists. We are planning to make the drive more stringent," said a police officer from Marine Drive police station.
Another officer said said that youngsters trying their hands on driving as the roads are nearly empty or with minimal traffic after 11pm. They sometimes speed and lose control over their vehicle which results in mishap. "It is for the parents to make sure that their children do not attempt driving on such roads and forbid them from speeding anywhere. Most of the mishaps occur after someone loses control over the vehicle," the officer added.
