It is a game of shrewd timing to beat the judiciary as well as the civic authorities. Parts of a ground plus two structure, which had constructed four illegal floors, was demolished for the third time in the last three months in the Pydhonie area. According to assistant commissioner of C ward, Dr Sangeeta Hasnale, the owner of the building has been served stop work notices and other notices under the MRTP act, and a FIR has also been filed at the local police station, but the work continued.

"Their modus operandi is to carry out the construction work late at night. Work progresses at a rapid pace, since the quality of the work is very poor. Later, these flats are sold," said Hasnale.

"In this case, the owners had filed a case at the Thane city civil court. First the courts usually put a stay order. However, even after that, work continues. But, when we try to demolish the illegal structure, a contempt of court order is served to us by the owner," said Hasnale.

Pydhonie, part of which comes under the C ward and part under the B ward, has seen rampant unauthorised constructions in the last couple of years.

"We continue with our demolition work and they continue to build them back," Hasnale said, adding that at times, the staff is threatened and they do not even get adequate police protection during the razing process.
