In a bid to curb the growing menace of overcharging on milk and milk products, the Legal Metrology Department has written to the state Food and Civil Supplies ministry requesting them to empower them with the status of specified officers, thereby enabling them to take action under the Essential Commodities Act. If this is approved, the LMD will be able to book overcharging cases with police, and the offence will be non-bailable with a punishment of seven years.
