After the Kamala Mills fire incident, Prashant Sapkale, the then Assistant Commissioner of BMC’s G South ward, spoke for the first time on the allegations being levelled against him for going soft on the pub 1 Above. He said that construction of the restaurant was already complete before he took over the charge of the ward.

“I am being punished for something that I have not done,” said Sapkale. He added that as per his information, the construction of 1 Above was completed in January 2017 while he was given charge of the ward in March that year. “How could I be made responsible if all the permissions were given before I took charge,” asked Sapkale.

He added that in the past six months, he had given three inspection reports (IR) to the restaurants to comply with fire safety norms. “It was me who seized their articles that were being used illegally,” said Sapkale, adding that he had carried out demolition of a part of the restaurant.

In the IR, BMC had found that 1 Above has been using the open terrace for trade activity, and also allowing smoking in the eating area without necessary permission from competent authority. “I had taken action on August 2 and September 22 against the restaurant,” said Sapkale.

Since Sapkale was transferred to K East ward after the incident, he alleged that he was being targeted unnecessarily. “People came in a morcha against me to my office stating they do not need a tainted officer. It’s very depressing,” added Sapkale.
