Pune polls: 10% voting seen in Pimpri Chinchwad

The fates of 1,181 candidates, 479 of them women, contending elections from 152 wards in Pune.

By 11 am, about 10% voting was reported in Pimpri-Chinchwad area. Polling at the some polling booths in Navi Sangvi and Pimpri began about half an hour late due to delay in activation of EVMs.

Voting for the elections of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations began peacefully at 7:30 am on February 16. The fates of 1,181 candidates, 479 of them women, contending elections from 152 wards in Pune and 894 candidates including 420 women in Pimpri Chinchawad would be sealed in the EVMs till 5:30 pm.

Pune Mayor Mohan Singh Rajpal cast his vote in the first leg of the voting.

MP Suresh Kalmadi, who has been calling shots from Delhi ever since he was released from Tihar Jail has also reached Pune but did not cast his vote in the first hour since the polling begins.

Pune has 25,58,792  voters while Pimpri Chinchwad has 11,52,584 voters. A total of 2,996 polling booths have been set up in Pune and 1,300 in Pimpri Chinchwad. No untoward incident has been reported so far.

The first hour of polling saw women voters and senior citizens visiting polling booths and exercising their franchise. However, quiet a few people were harassed due to various goof ups in voter’s list like missing names and the lists showing wrong polling stations.

Polling booths set up in clubhouses of various housing societies appears to be receiving good response in Pimpri Chinchwad area. About 20% voting took place in the polling booths at Empire Estate and Gandharvanagari societies in the first hour after the polling began.

Response at the polling boots set up at housing societies in Kondhawa area was low in the first one and a half hour since the polling began. Voters going to cast votes at the booths at Ashoka Mews and Konarkpuram housing societies in Kondhawa before proceeding to workplace faced problems because there were no political agents to assist them find out their names and polling booths in the voters list.

MP Suresh Kalmadi voted at Dr Shamrao Kalmadi High School opposite the Kalmadi House in Erandavane around 10.30am. Kalmadi was accompanied by wife Meera and supporter Dr Satish Desai as he walked down to the polling booth. Kalmadi drew a lot of media gaze but refused to comment. All he had to say was, "Wait for a few hours and you will see it yourself."
