Over 90 per cent of the total 439 cases of chikungunya in Maharashtra since January this year have been reported from Pune district, according to a latest health department report. Of the 439 cases of chikungunya recorded in the state, 393 cases were detected in Pune district, between January 1 and August 31.

In Pune, 225 of 393 cases were reported from Pune city, while 168 from rural parts of the district. Figures indicate that the city civic body needs to intensify surveillance and eliminate breeding spots of the aedes aegypti mosquito which causes dengue and chikungunya.

Meanwhile, the BMC has clarified that there is no need to worry. "We have not found any cases of chikungunya in the city. Since there is no outbreak, there is no risk of the spread," said Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer, BMC.

However, the city is witnessing a spurt in the number of dengue cases. Latest figures released by BMC for the month of September (till 15th) show that 2058 patients have been admitted to the civic hospitals with symptoms of dengue. 160 out of these patients have already tested positive for dengue.

Civic officials have attributed the spurt in the dengue cases to climatic conditions that are ideal for breeding of the dengue spreading Aedes Egypti mosquito.
