In a bid to control open defecation and construct public toilets for slum dwellers under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the over-enthusiastic civic administration has built a public toilet on the premises of a civic school in Malavani in Malad (West). The toilet may cause inconvenience to students.

The toilet was proposed by Congress legislator Aslam Shaikh and Congress Corporator Qumarjahan Siddique. Sources say that the premises is under the jurisdiction of the education department, and that the ward office has started constructing the toilet. "The school authorities will not have any say as construction has been taken up by the civic ward. The school authorities could not oppose. The ward office should not have allowed a toilet to be constructed on school premises," said a civic official.

However, the issue was highlighted by a few parents to Shubhada Gudekar, chairperson of the BMC's education committee. To check the authenticity of the claim, Gudekar decided to visit the premises. "What I witnessed was appalling. How can a public toilet be constructed on the school premises, and that too near water tanks that supply water to the school. The corporator and MLA might be constructing the toilet to woo voters. I have no objection, but I have my reservations about the venue. Why should I allow a toilet to be built at the cost of students' health and hygiene," said Gudekar.

The Deputy Education Officer has written to the Assistant Commissioner of P/North Ward to put a stop to the construction.

When questioned, Siddique said, "The toilet is being built behind the school building. Students will not be inconvenienced".
