The defence advocate in the Kopardi rape and murder case on Thursday informed the local court of the Ahmednagar district that they would like to examine special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam as a defence witness in the case. The court, however, will decide on the matter on Friday, after advocate Nikam files his reply. Nikam was named as one of the six defence witnesses in the application, which the defence had filed before the court.
Advocate Balasaheb Khopade, the defence advocate for accused Santosh Bhawal, said, "Nikam was appointed as a special public prosecutor in the case. The Chief Minister, in a television interview addressing the state, had specifically mentioned that the investigation in the case would come under the supervision of advocate Nikam. Further, we found out that the parents and relatives of the deceased girl were asked to meet Nikam at his bungalow in Jalgaon and that the said meeting went on for almost two and half hours. We have obtained technical evidence with regard to the same. Also, Vinod Tawde, Senior BJP leader, said in a televison interview that the charge-sheet filed in the case will be scrutinised by Nikam and he would accordingly fill the lacunae, if any, in the police case. The evidence which has come on record in the case, has been as per Nikam's say."
Advocate Khopade further said that when Nikam was asked to file a reply, he complained of ill-heath and left the court. When asked about his health following news of his ill-health doing rounds during the court proceedings, Nikam said that he was fine and that he never mentioned feeling unwell.
A teen-aged girl was brutally raped and killed by three men at Kopardi in Ahmednagar on July 13, 2016. The victim was returning after meeting her grandfather, when she was allegedly accosted by three men, who stangled her to death after gangraping.
