In an order that will help those giving online exams to check their answers, the state information commission (SIC) has asked the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) to provide the answer paper of an online exam to the applicant.

The order dated July 6, 2017, which was also the date of second appeal hearing, was given after a second appeal was filed by Dr Sumir Dembla. The order was given by Ajit Kumar Jain, state information commissioner Brihanmumbai bench.

Dembla had sought information on the MS-CIT (Maharashtra State Certificate in Information Technology) exams that he had given, a mandatory exam for all government officers to check their computer knowledge. In his application, he had sought details of the answer sheet in which his answers were marked wrong and details of the correct answers.

The public information officer (PIO) did not provide any of the details to the applicant. During the hearing, the PIO said that since the exams are conducted online and each person appearing for the exam gets a different set of questions, it is not possible to provide the details. He added that a hard copy of the information is not available.

Relying on a SC judgment, which stated that a student has the right to his answer sheet, the commission observed, "Only if the answer sheet is in a soft copy format, an online inspection for the same should be given."
