In about ten days, appointed inspectors will visit roads in Matunga, Parel and Dadar — or zone II as far as designating hawking areas goes — to weed out arbitrary hawking pitches.

The inspection drive will begin on December 8 and be conducted by members of town vending committee (TVC), formed especially to regulate hawking zones.

The move follows allegations by residents of these central Mumbai localities, which fall in the civic F and G wards, that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed hawking pitches arbitrarily, crowding certain roads while leaving others untouched.

Residents from M Lotlikar Road in Matunga (East) have said more than 2,190 pitches have been proposed on 40 of the 174 roads in the civic ward. Some 116 of these are wide and can house hawkers but they have been left put of the plan, they say.

Nikhil Desai, coordinator of AGNI NGO in Matunga and a member of TVC zone II, said the roads would turn into a traffic nightmare because of the high density of hawkers. But, he said, the final decision on the pitches would be taken after a visit of these sites. “The civic body has arranged for all 20 members of the committee to visit these road sites,” said Desai.

In F South ward, the BMC had proposed 5,957 pitches on 33 roads. After objections from residents, the ward office revised the numbers to 1,886 pitches on 15 roads.

A BMC official said all suggestions were being vetted. “The BMC will verify all 1,660 suggestions in three stages to ensure not a single pitch is dropped wrongly nor any citizen’s goes heard.
