On Tuesday, a 30-year-old Virar resident was commuting to hospital when she went into labour in the second class compartment of a Virar-Churchgate local. Thankfully, the ensuing chaos was put to rest thanks to prompt intervention by the government railway police (GRP), who helped deliver a healthy baby boy at Bhayander station.

Mala Choudhary, 30, a resident of Phoolpada in Virar (E), along with her mother-in-law was heading towards Kandivali's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital at around 6am. As soon as the train crossed Naigaon station, Choudhary started screaming for help as she went into labour. Fellow female commuters informed GRP officials, after which prompt help arrived at Bhayander station.

Narrating the incident, a Vasai GRP official said, "We first took her on a stretcher and located a vacant room, where, with the help of our staff and some female commuters, she delivered a healthy baby boy. We had already arranged an ambulance, so she was later shifted to a hospital at Kandivali."

Speaking to dna, Mala Choudhary said, "I am thankful to the officials for helping me during my delivery, for, had they not acted swiftly, I could have lost my life. Now, I am happy that my baby is safe and healthy."
