With the corridors of power once again abuzz with talks of who will be the next Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, rival groups within the Indian Police Service (IPS) ranks have become active.

Reports, information and rumours are being planted and floated regarding police officers who are in the race to become the next Mumbai police chief and even other senior officials who are going to be promoted.

A section of the media on Thursday reported that current Mumbai CP, Satyapal Singh, is planning to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was reported that Singh is in talks with senior leaders of the BJP and is likely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Meerut or Baghpat constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

When dna asked Singh, he said it is a “motivated report”. Singh did not elaborate on it. However, another senior police officer said it is not surprising that such reports are coming up at a time when Singh is expected to be promoted as Director General (DG) and likely to be posted at a coveted post.

“It happens all the time,” the officer said.

“Whenever there are reports that a new Mumbai CP or DGP or Mumbai crime branch chief is to be appointed, all kinds of negative reports start surfacing regarding police officers who are potential candidates for the posts,” the officer added.

Last week, there were reports that one of the suspects arrested in Dr Narendra Dhabolkar murder case told a Pune court that Additional Director General (ADG) and chief of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Rakesh Maria had given the suspect Rs25 lakh to accept and confess to the crime.

“Now, two days ago, the suspect has taken back his statement and told the court that he said it in anger,” the officer said.

“It cannot be just coincidence that Maria is a top contender to become Mumbai CP and the government is in the process of finalising it in the next few days,” the officer said.

“Singh too is expected to get a top posting once he is promoted, that is why such a report about Singh is at this time is not surprising,” the officer added.
