The state transport department has issued a circular asking to initiate action against all private vehicles sporting "Police" tags or even logo of police organisations like Mumbai Traffic Police, Mumbai Police or Maharashtra Police.

Several individuals from the police force paste such labels or put temporary boards, displaying “police” to use it as a clout for violating traffic rules. Due to such labels or logos, impersonators also fleece money from unsuspecting motorists who either jump a signal or violate some other traffic rules.

The circular issued (in Marathi) on Friday to all the Regional Transport Offices of the state reads, “…police officers/staff put up police department’s logo or board on the private vehicles owned by them, it has been informed to not put up such official marks. The violators, if apprehended, should be prosecuted appropriately.”

Not only the police staff but also individuals not associated with the police force also paste such stickers on the windscreens or on motorbikes to avoid payment of penalty in case they violate traffic laws or even to avoid paying toll at the toll posts.

“These stickers are easily available in open market. Anyone and everyone can buy it for Rs10-15 and paste it on the windscreen. There are several benefits that come along by displaying it, the toll collection individuals at the toll plazas do not stop the car to pay toll money, therefore saving hundreds of rupees in just toll payment,” said Sion resident Praveen Sawant.

The crackdown against such violators is yet to commence across the state by the RTOs. As per the directive issued, apart from penalising the individual, the stickers too will be removed from the vehicle.
