The alleged killing of convict Manjula Shetye inside Byculla prison has set alarm bells ringing inside Maharashtra prisons, the prison authorities have studied the incident which revealed that due to lack of communication between the inmates and prison staff led to the incident after which the senior prison authorities now have planned to meet the inmates at least twice a month and scrutinize their complaints.

On June 23, Shetye, who was made a warden at Byculla jail, was allegedly assaulted by the prison jailer Manisha Pokharkar and five other jail staff, after she complained that a lesser quantity of eggs and bread was being supplied for the barrack she was supervising. Shetye was brought dead to JJ Hospital, and a case of murder against six prison staff was subsequently registered at Nagpada police station. On June 24, more than 200 inmates protested the death of Shetye and set prison property on fire, and some even managed to climb onto the terrace of the prison.

Moreover, prison authorities will draw up a list of wardens inside the Maharashtra prisons and will seek their advice to maintain law and order inside the prison. "Normally wardens are never assaulted by the prison staff as they work as middlemen between prisoners and jail staffers. This is the first such incident in which jail staffers are being alleged to have killed the jail warden", said a senior prison officer.

"We have studied the beating of prison inmate Shetye, who was a warden, and its subsequent effect on inmates rioting inside the prison and found that the entire incident was due to miscommunication," said the officer.

Rajvardhan Sinha, Inspector General (Prisons), said, "We plan to meet the prison inmates at least twice a month and make sure that their grievances regarding the prison staff or other inmates are scrutinized and necessary prompt action is taken."

"We are also ensuring that similar such incident do not take place and women inmates are not targeted by the prison jailer or the staffers.", said Sinha.
