The city corporation on Saturday suspended the principal of a civic-run school for 10 days following allegations that he had harassed a girl student. A three-member committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will now probe the matter to decide whether to press criminal charges.

BMC officials said Kamlakar Kudale, principal of a school in eastern Mumbai, faced action for allegedly proposing a girl student. Sources said Kudale used to stalk the girl and kept insisting on an answer to his "proposal".

Unable to bear the trauma, the girl informed her father about the harassment. The enraged father barged into the school and thrashed Kudale, said sources, adding that Kudale had harassed more than one girl students.

Mahesh Palkar, education officer of BMC education department said, "We have suspended the principal for ten days from that school for proposing a girl student. An inquiry conducted by our officers will be submitted to the three-member committee that will decide the further action whether to be taken or not on principal."

The decision to temporarily suspend Kudale came after officials spoke to teacher, staff and other students.

However, while Kudale was thrashed on February 27 for harassment, and an inquiry was conducted on March 1, he was working in the school Saturday.

Kudale told DNA: "I was in school today conducting board exam and so not aware of the action taken on him." He disconnected the phone when this correspondent asked about the allegation of harassment.
