Vidyadhar Rajbhar, the main accused in the Hema Upadhayay and Harish Bhambhani murder case, escaped from the city on the day of the crime. Investigating the case, Kandivli police have learnt that Vidyadhar also made call to his wife and told her to leave the city immediately.

The police informed that Vidyadhar, after killing Hema and her lawyer Bhambhani, took a train to Varanasi from Dadar around 9.30pm on Friday night along with the arrested accused Shivkumar Rajbhar. However, after reaching Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh, Vidyadhar told Shivkumar that he wanted to surrender to the police and got off the train.

"Vidyadhar had switched off his mobile since December 13. We have launched a manhunt to nab him and are hopeful to get him soon," said a police officer.

According to the police, Vidyadhar had called Hema in the afternoon on that day and told her to meet him as he claimed to have some clinching evidence against her enstranged husband Chintan Upadhyay. However, Vidyadhar wanted money in return of the evidence. Hema reportedly agreed to have a look at the evidence along with her lawyer Bhambhani and later decide on the payment.

"Bhambhani had reached Hema's studio in Andheri and from there they left for Vidyadhar's workshop in Laljipada in Kandivli (West)", said an officer. "In the workshop there was an altercation between Hema and Vidyadhar after which Hema slapped him. Vidyadhar, with the help of the others, put chloroform in a piece of cloth and gagged Hema and Bhambani before killing them."

Vidyadhar later called the tempo that he generally uses for transporting his finished product. The bodies of the duo were put inside the tempo. The police claimed Vijaykumar and Shivkumar then went along with the tempo driver to dispose of the bodies.

The bodies were found in a Kandivli nullah on Saturday evening.
