A 30-year-old pregnant woman committed suicide at her Santacruz (East) residence on Saturday morning. The deceased had got married last year and was residing with her husband.

The woman has been identified as Manorama Rajan Khatik. She was a resident of the Shankardham building located in Vakola, where she stayed in her martial home on the second floor. Khatik was found hanging by her dupatta in her bedroom at around 10:30 am.

"Her relatives informed us about the suicide after which a team of policemen from Vakola went to the spot and sent the body for postmortem at Cooper hospital," said police inspector Uttam Khadlag, Vakola police station.

The Vakola police informed that Khatik's in-laws stayed one floor below the couple. The in-laws told the police that the deceased seemed normal when she went to visit them in the morning. Later, she excused herself saying she had some work to tend to. At around 10:45 am, her sister-in-law went to Khatik's place, but when nobody answered the door on ringing the bell recurrently, the neighbours were alerted. They broke open the door only to find Khatik hanging by her dupatta from the ceiling.

"Khatik was alone at home when she committed suicide. We have searched the whole apartment, but have not found any suicide note," said PI Khadlag. He further added, "We are trying to find out if she faced any problems with her husband or in-laws. However, nobody has come forward till now. If the investigation does throw light on the cause of her taking her own life, and if we find that a particular person has a role to play in it, we will add the relevant sections."

The Vakola police have currently lodged an accidental death report in the case.
