Regular walkers and visitors at Nana Nani Park in Girgaum Chowpatty will soon face electricity issues at the park. As per the civic authority, the park does not come under the BMC's jurisdiction due to which it will not be paying electricity bills henceforth. The garden was developed about 20 years ago under MLA funds and the land belongs to the collector of greater Mumbai.

The BMC has written to the collector to either hand over the garden or pay the electricity bill. The park was developed over collector land in 1999 and since then the civic body has been paying the electricity bill.

However, now the civic body has decided that the bill must be paid by the collector's office. In case the collector's office does not pay the bill, electricity supply to the park is likely to be be disrupted.

According to a civic official, BMC has already paid around Rs 35 lakh since the park was developed.

"Excluding the electricity bill of the last two months, the BMC paid all power bills since it was developed," said Vishawas Mote, assistant commissioner of D ward. "We are ready to pay the bill but with a condition that they handover the park for us to run it," added Mote, who said they had not received a reply from the city collector's office.

A senior official from the City Collector officer said that they have received letter from the BMC and they are planning to handover the park. But this will take time.

Meanwhile, residents who often use the park raised concerns that they have to face blackout in the park if the issue between two government agencies are not sorted out in time. "We hope that the issue will be solved prior to disruption in power," said Prakash Chandani, a senior citizen who visits the park everyday.
