Three days after a middle-aged woman was allegedly gagged and raped on a deserted road in Powai, the police have no clue about the suspect and are unable to identify the exact spot where the incident happened.

The police have recorded the woman's statement and on the basis of her description they are preparing a sketch of the man. They have also questioned 25 people in the area, but have not made any breakthrough.

The 38-year-old woman was walking down Tata Lane, off Marol-Maroshi Road when she was accosted and raped a little after midnight of Friday-Saturday.

"As per the woman's statement the suspect was in the early 20s. He approached her and took her to an isolated spot, then gagged and raped her," said Yadavrao Jadhav, senior inspector, Powai police station, which is now handling the case.

The woman was lying on the road and bleeding profusely. She was taken to Cooper hospital by passersby and the MIDC police was informed about the incident. She is still in hospital and under observation.

"She is a bit confused and has not been able to describe the exact location of the incident. It may also be because it was pitch dark in the lane where the incident took place. When she is discharged from hospital we hope she will be able to point to the exact location," said Jadhav.

Another police official said that once the crime spot is clear they would question shopkeepers, auto drivers and youth who pass through the area during the night.

The woman resides in Marol with her mother and brother. She had undergone anger management therapy a few years ago. But recently she left the house after an argument with her mother and went to live with her sister, who resides nearby.

"On Friday morning, she had an argument with her sister and in a fit of rage she left the house and went to Bandra. After spending the day in Bandra and Khar she returned at Marol. The incident happened when she was walking back home," said Jadhav.
