The Powai police have registered a case of accidental death report (ADR) following the major fire at a 21-storey plush residential building in the suburb on Saturday.

According to the police, seven people died and 28 were injured in the blaze that broke out on the 14th floor of the Chandivali Lake Home society, gutting three flats.

"We are waiting for the fire brigade report in this regard which will reveal the exact cause of fire following which further actions will be initiated. Investigations are on to ascertain the origin of the fire and the sequence of events," said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (zone X).

"As per the procedure, we investigate if there any sabotage or negligence in this case. A case will be registered if there is anything amiss," he added

The Powai police are in process of recording the statements of the witnesses. "We are recording statements as part of our investigations. We are also assessing the damage done to the residents in the fire," said an officer from Powai police station.

The Powai fire broke out at 6pm on the 14th floor and spread to the 15th floor. It was brought under control around 8.30pm after nine fire engines and six water tankers were rushed to the spot along with firefighters with snorkels, breathing apparatus vans, and ambulances.
