Powai lake drowning: Cops to book navigator, club ends membership

The Powai police have taken the statements of the rescued persons and have revealed that the boat owner and the navigator would be booked for causing death due to negligence. The club in an urgent meeting on Sunday has decided to terminate the membership of the boat owner for giving out the boat.

On Friday night, eight persons from Ghatkopar went inside the boat house belonging to Newton Joshua which was navigated by Abu Mandal. The boat crashed into the pole leading to capsize and drowning of Ateeq Khan, 20, Rasool Khan, 40 and Saffiulla Zakir Hussein, 20 all residents of Shantiniketan Apartment in Ghatkopar West.

Newton Joshua, the member of private membership club of Maharashtra State Angling Association (MASA) at Powai lake had given out the boat to the youth supposedly for fishing from the outer section of the lake leading to the incident.

“We held an urgent meeting to terminate the membership of the boat owner and have proposed to the BMC to install more lights and CCTV cameras near the banks of the lake for safety”, said Sayed Zeeshan, President of the club.

“We have banned the entry inside the lake after 11 pm and before 6 am,” he added.

Investigation officer, Avinash Nadvilkeri, said, “We have taken the statements of the rescued persons and have learnt that the boat was being illegally navigated inside the lake which led to the incident. As of now a case of accidental death has been registered but we will file an FIR.”

GUARD SAVES 3

Parvez Khan,42 a resident of Powai and an ace swimmer of the club was securing the lake when he heard loud screams of three persons. He rushed in his row boat and pulled them up one by one. “They revealed that three others have drowned while two managed to swim to the banks. I was inside the lake. Soon I untied them,” said Parvez Khan, security guard.
