In what could be the first pothole death in Maharashtra this monsoon, a 15-year-old boy from Boisar died after he fell off his bicycle and was run over by a speeding truck on Wednesday. Ashish Amar Yadav met the fatal end when he was on his way to Dr SD Vartak High school at Saravali village.

The Std X student was pedalling on a pockmarked road that was flooded due to heavy rains. As he was trying to negotiate the tricky stretch, one of the cycle wheels got stuck in a pothole, throwing him off the road.

The police said before the boy could get up, a speeding truck bearing registration number MH-04 CG-7628 crushed him. Eyewitnesses said Yadav died on the spot, while the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot.

Ashish was a resident of Sanjay Nagar and was the only child to his parents. His father Amar too works as a driver. "Due to negligence of local authorities, my son lost his life at such a young age," said an unconsolable Amar. Complete silence took over his grief-stricken village.

"The stretch between the Boisar railway station and Saravali village has numerous potholes. After one of the wheels went into a pothole, Ashish lost his balance and was hit by the truck. The truck driver fled from the accident spot," said an officer from Boisar MIDC police station.

The police have booked a case under section 304A(causing death due to negligence), 279(rash driving) under the Indian Penal Code and other sections of Motor Vehicle Act. "We are investing the matter and will soon arrest the driver," said assistant-inspector Aabasaheb Patil.
