A few days before TMC elections, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced during BJP’s election campaign at Diva that it will soon be free of illegal constructions. As soon as the elections wrapped up last month, demolitions began in the area.

“On Wednesday and Thursday we demolished 90 illegal rooms in Dativli area of Diva,” says Ashok Burpulle, deputy municipal commissioner. TMC.

This has quite perturbed the residents who were hoping for freedom from garbage dumping ground.  “The CM had also announced that dumping of garbage will stop at Diva.  But it is the houses which are being demolished,” says Anil Patil, a resident of Diva.

The residents say that this is quite sudden and they do not know what to do.  “We were given notices two days prior to demolition that our houses are illegal. We pay all the bills - water bills, property tax - then why are our houses being demolished?” he asked.

The TMC officials said that though the demolition activity is on hold this weekend, it will resume once again next week. “As long as there are illegal buildings in Diva we will carry on the demolition and the next round begins from next week,” says Burpulle.
