It seems the Bombay High Court's (HC) rap to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to solve its garbage dumping problem has worked. To take care of the solid waste generated in the city, the civic body has brought in a private company that will be entrusted with the task to convert waste into electricity.

On February 6, the TMC signed a contract with the Thane Clean Environment Private Limited. “This company will produce electricity from the garbage collected within the city limits,” said Sandeep Malvi, public relation officer, TMC.

The garbage will be processed at Daighar solid waste management plant and it will take three months for the project to become functional. Daily, around 600 to 700 metric tonne waste is generated in Thane, which is dumped by the TMC at three locations namely, Hari Om nagar, Diva and Daighar.

Producing electricity from garbage is one of the ambitious plans of the TMC and the project has finally got a push after the instructions from the HC to take immediate measures to solve dumping problem. On February 3, while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Thane activist Chandrahas Tawade, the bench comprising Justice Abhay Oak and CV Badang stated that if they found that management of solid waste (MSW) rules are not complied with and the required action is not taken by the TMC, then they will not hesitate to pass a prohibitory order against new construction in the city. The HC gave TMC a week to file their reply and the matter is likely to come up for hearing on February 12.

Tawde said, “I am thankful to TMC chief Sanjeev Jaiswal to take this initiative and citizens will support him, provided they are taken into confidence,” adding, “Why is it that the government administration does not take action unless there is a casualty or an HC order,” he questioned. He questioned if it is necessary that every time citizens have to approach the court to make authorities perform their duty, which they are bound to do under the constitution.
