A possible hit by a vehicle resulted in the death of a leopard whose carcass was found by the forest department on Thursday morning few meters away from Vasai- Vajreshwari road close to the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS).

Incidentally, the leopard was first spotted sitting in bushes close to a tribal settlement near Mandvi range on Wednesday late evening.

The initial sighting of the leopard on Wednesday spread like a wildfire with a huge crowd gathering all around the area even as Leopard Rescue Team from Thane Forest Department (Territorial) rushed to the site along with Wildlife biologist Nikit Surve and Pawan Sharma, Honorary Wildlife Warden of Thane. Seeing the condition of the leopard the team guessed that it was either injured or unwell.

As per Dr Jitendra Ramgaonkar, Deputy Conservator of Forest Thane the attempts to tranquillize the big cat at night was risky as it was injured and they did not want to take any chances.

"It was already dark and hence we decided to station our staff for the entire night to keep a watch on the leopard. However when the rescue team along with Dr Shailesh Pethe, Veterinary Officer of SGNP reached the site early on Thursday morning they found the carcass of the leopard few meters away from the location where it was located last night," he said adding that the postmortem seemed to suggest that this could be a case of road accident after which the leopard came and sat at the site and was growling continuously.

Meanwhile, Dr Pethe said that the post-mortem of the male leopard whose age is estimated to be around five to six years old was carried out in SGNP by the team of veterinary pathologists from Bombay Veterinary College. "The post-mortem results are awaited but prima facie it seems that the there was a strong impact that caused profuse bleeding in the abdominal cavity causing hypovolemic shock and death," he said.
