Positive sentiments in industry sector and MNCs led to bumper job offers in engineering campuses across India

An undergraduate student of computer engineering at IIT Kharagpur has bagged an annual package of Rs1.55 crore, the highest offered to any IITian in campus recruitments. Deepika Adlakha, of IIT Bombay, has got a job offer worth Rs1.44 crore annually from Facebook.

Its boom time for campus recruitments. On an average, there has been a 20-25 per cent increase in salary packages and number of job offers this year across IITs indicating a positive sentiment after a weak spell of past three years. Within three days of starting the campus placement for 2014-2015, most of the IITs were able to place about 70 per cent of their student applicants.

Overall, big-ticket offers are back with a bang with the top recruiters almost going on a rampage: Samsung (best job offer: Rs93 lakh), Microsoft (Rs80 lakh), Oracle (Rs78 lakh plus Esops), Google (Rs78 lakh) and Visa (Rs87 lakh), have placed immense faith in IITians.

Most importantly, hiring in core manufacturing sector has got a major boost this time. "Core manufacturing companies have offered highest number of jobs this time compared to past 4 years and credit goes to strong and majority government at the Centre and "make in India' policy," said Jogendra Kumar Nayak, placement officer at IIT Roorkee. where the top package this year is Rs90 lakh, almost 25 per cent up from the previous year.

Not only IITs, even other top engineering colleges in India are also elated with the bumper placement offers. For instance, National Institute of Technology, Nagpur has managed to place 333 out of 540 students in the first phase of recruitment.

Prof AB Andhare, associate dean at NIT, Nagpur told dna, "There is a surge in offers for the mechanical and electronic engineering students which is very satisfying especially since core sector jobs have been fewer in past three years."

VJTI Mumbai and College of Engineering Pune (COEP) students have bagged annual packages of Rs40 lakh. "We started placement exercises in August and have already placed 90 per cent of the students and are now moving for 100 per cent placement," said the placement officer of VJTI.

Campus-placement officers predict a good year ahead for engineering graduates. Prof Sandeep Mehsram, the placement officer of COEP, Pune, said, "There has been a positive sentiments in the industry sector since the new government came to power. A boost in manufacturing sector can be seen by next year."

With the sentiment showing a marked improvement, there is likely to be a ripple effect. Pharma, hotel management, architecture and even science, arts and commerce graduates can get a better deal this time according to a professor of Mumbai University.
