In a move to revamp a part of the port trust land on the eastern coast of Mumbai, the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has floated bids to appoint a consultant within two months. The plan is aimed at developing a marina, a tourist village and a bigger passenger terminal, among other things.

“A consultant will be appointed, who will prepare a master plan to develop the port land along with creating an infrastructure design,” confirmed an official.

As per the Request for Proposal (RFP) floated by the MbPT, the concept design will be prepared for an area of 342 hectares. The master plan, detailed project report, marketing strategy as well as the implementation plan will be prepared for an area of 165 hectares, as only that much land is immediately available with the port authorities.Certain existing revenue activities will have to be either discontinued or shifted to other locations. Overall, MbPT owns 752 hectares of land.

After the consultant's appointment, it will take another year to finalise and prepare the master plan. As and when the components of the larger project are conceptualised, MbPT officials will initiate the process of implementation.Various elements of the plan include marina, tourist village, 10km waterfront walkway, eco-park, garden, bigger international cruise terminal, convention centre, water sports, floatels, and so on. The services of the consultant will be continued for 42 months.

Among the first of the components to be executed is the marina at Princess Docks, for which the procedure has been initiated. Next to this will be a terminal for inland water transport to connect with Nerul in Navi Mumbai and Mandwa near Alibaug.

Nearly two years ago, the Rani Jadhav committee report was prepared and some recommendations from that report will be taken up as well, while preparing the master plan for Mumbai's eastern waterfront.
