This year, over 1 lakh seats are available in 450 polytechnic institutes across the state, including 20 new polytechnics added after approval from All India Council for Technical Education a week ago.

Online admissions in these institutes will start after the SSC results are out. To facilitate admission for students in rural areas, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has increased the number of application form receipt centres.

The admission process for polytechnic courses has also been made student-friendly, just like that of engineering. This year, students can apply in the second round of admissions if they do not get a seat in their first choice of college filled in the application form. Earlier, students could apply in the second round only when they did not get a seat in any of their first three choices.

A DTE official said, "Most students see these diploma courses as an easy way to get into engineering colleges in the state. After the three-year diploma course, students can seek admission in any of the engineering courses."

As many students fail in first-year engineering, seats fall vacant in the second year, which paves the way for lateral entry of diploma students. "They need not stick to the branch they opted for in their diploma course. Also, they need not go through the common entrance test for engineering admissions. Students will also save money on coaching institutes," said a DTE official.
