With police struggling to curb vishing cases, fraudsters are coming up with new tricks to siphon off money from victims' bank accounts. In a recent case, a senior citizen from Santacruz (East) was duped of Rs 1 lakh. However, this time the caller did not ask for any card details, but read out the victim's identification details himself in order to gain the persons trust. He thereby managed to obtain the OTP (one-time password) from the victim, hacking his bank account and Paytm account to siphon off the money.

The complainant, Ajit Jayakar, said that a few days ago, when Jayakar received the call, the fraudster himself provided the details of his card accurately. Jayakar was that since he had not used the card for a year, they were verifying the details and needed the OTP from him to verify the mobile number. "As the caller had all the details, including my address, I thought he was a genuine bank official. He had said they were making changes in the system, so I shared the OTP. The caller then said the changes had been made, and then hung up."

Clueless about any fraudulent activity, Jayakar did not check his account for a few days. But when he stopped receiving calls or messages from the bank, he checked his account and realised his registered phone number had been changed and Rs 1 lakh had been transferred within two days to three different Paytm accounts.

"Police suspect the fraudster must have somehow procured Jayant's card details, and to carry out transactions he changed his registered mobile number so that Jayant would remain unaware as he anyway hadn't used the card for a year,"

"We have registered a case and our probe is on. The victim's details must have been leaked," said an officer from Santacruz Police Station
