The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Sunday, arrested a Sub-inspector with the economic offences wing (EOW) after he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs40,000 from a complainant.

According to sources, the accused, Prakash Patil, 51, attached to Unit 7 of EOW was the investigating officer in a case of cheating involving a businessman who owned plastic manufacturing and product business. A chargesheet in the case had been filed. An ACB officer said, "The businessman is the complainant in the case. There were cases of cheating filed against two of his companies."

However, a few days ago, Patil ensured the complainant that he will help him settle the case if he paid up. He demanded Rs2 lakh in order to not present any witnesses in court. "Patil demanded a sum of Rs1 lakh each in two installments. Following this, the complainant approached the ACB and narrated the incident," said the officer.

On Sunday morning, the complainant met Patil in Borivli west and handed over a sum of Rs40,000. Patil was caught red-handed by the ACB officers accepting the bribe. He was immediately arrested under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
