A 24-year-old woman lodged a complaint against her groom and his parents after they called-off the wedding citing that she was not 'academically well-qualified'. The victim demanded that the wedding expenses be paid by them, failing which she approached the Vartak Nagar police on April 2.

The whole episode unfolds between February 22 and March 30. The accused is identified as Ramesh Namdev More (27), a resident of Mahabaleshwar and a case has been registered under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

The victim said, "We got engaged on February 8 and after a few days, More asked me if I am a graduate. I told him that I have failed in HSC. On February 20, he told me that he cannot marry me as my family lied to him about my qualification. However, when I spoke to his father, he assured me that he will make his son understand."

"More appraoched after eight days and apologised. On March 7, in a sudden change of mind, he again refused to marry. Our wedding date was March 30 and I was confused over his changing stance. To be on safer side on March 19, we met More at the Vartak Nagar police station and asked him to give in writing that he is ready for the marriage."

The police further informed that the next day, More was ready to pay the amount spent for the ring ceremony. "Five days before the wedding, he said he will pay us Rs 40,000, but he did not turn up till the day of the wedding. An official said, "The accused is currently staying at Grant Road and we have sent our team there. We will ask him and take his statement. If he is found guilty, we will arrest him."
