In the wake of the road widening work at Pokharan Road No1, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has started with the demolition drive at Vartak Nagar and shops that obstructed the work were demolished, on Tuesday.

The civic body has already completed the work of acquiring space for the widening work. The boundary wall of Laxmi market was also demolished under the guidance of the officials. The junction at Pokharan Road No1 is one of the busiest in the city witnessing maximum traffic during peak hours and residents from the area had requested the TMC to widen the road.

With Singhania school located on the stretch, motorists would get stuck in traffic for over two to three hours when the school would commence and end, so road widening was the need of hour and TMC had thus agreed to it.

I have personally examined the area and people have willingly helped in the road widening work."

Civic officials said the shopkeepers along the stretch were given 15 days time to clear the area and most of them had agreed to it. "So, the demolition work was carried out to claim the area and the stretch will now be widened," added an official.

Members of the WhatsApp group, Thane Citizen's Voice, which raised the road widening work with the TMC have expressed their joy over the decision. "It is good to know that people are helping TMC in road widening, but we also want the civic chief to look into the matter of shopkeepers who are losing their livelihood and give them the promised compensation soon so, that they can start their life again," said a member.
