Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani is now Dr Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Geelani for his "contribution to the Kashmir cause and his literary prowess".

"Geelani sahab has been conferred this doctorate for his services to the Kashmir cause. It has also been given in recognition of his literary works," said Ayaz Akbar, spokesman of the hard-line Hurriyat Conference, led by Geelani.

PoK president Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan made the announcement in this regard during a seminar on Kashmir in Islamabad. The two-day seminar was organised by MUST.

Geelani (86) has written over 50 books and booklets in Urdu, including two volumes of his autobiography Wular Kinaray (on the banks of Wular). The first volume was released in 2011, a year after he led the "Azadi groundswell" in Kashmir.

In a candid confession, Geelani disclosed that National Conference (NC) stalwart Moulana Mohammad Sayeed Masoodi was like a father, teacher and mentor to him. The Hurriyat hawk said despite the divergent political ideologies, Masoodi helped him get education and overcome depressing times. Masoodi was assassinated by Pakistan-trained militants in 1990, while he was already on his deathbed,
Geelani spent four years in NC headquarters Mujahid Manzil, before he became a government teacher. He eventually left that position as well after joining Jamat-e-Islami.

"It was the Maulana who helped me in getting different degrees. In fact, he arranged an English teacher for me, so that I could pass my matriculation. He wanted me to pursue MA. He also got me job as a teacher in a government school," he wrote in his autobiography.

Expressing gratitude to MUST, the Hurriyat spokesman said the university has encouraged the whole Kashmiri nation by acknowledging Geelani's tireless services. Later, the Hurriyat hawk's recorded video message was also played in the seminar. "India is not fulfilling its promises made to the Kashmiri people on both national and international levels. We demand a Scotland-type referendum in J&K. Until the Kashmiri people are given a free and fair chance to decide their future, Kashmir will remain a dispute," said Geelani.
