Is the chief medical officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), a registered medical practitioner (RMP) or not?

Shocking though it may sound, a show cause notice has been served to ST Pardeshi, PMC’s chief medical officer (CMO) asking him to clarify the status of his registration as a practicing doctor with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).

Several complaints were filed after Pardeshi’s appointment to the post. The registrar of the MMC, in a letter, told the Pune municipal commissioner that Pardeshi’s name was not on the MMC records, and a complaint received in this regard was to be discussed by the medical council.

According to MMC rules, all doctors, who want to practise medicine, teach at medical colleges or hold government offices, that require a person to be an RMP, have to register their names with the MMC.

The registration is renewed every five years, and the names of those, who fail to do so, are deleted from the MMC register.

Only those doctors whose names are on the MMC register can practise medicine. However, the MMC renews the expired registrations after collecting a fine from the doctors.

The notice, issued last week by PMC additional municipal commissioner (general) Naresh Zurmure, states that it is mandatory for all allopathic doctors in the state to register with the MMC, and that practising without following this procedure is considered illegal.

The letter, a copy of which is with DNA, says that according to several complaints received by the PMC, Pardeshi had registered with the MMC in 1982, but failed to renew his registration after that.

Hence, the show cause notice issued to Pardeshi has asked him to come clean on the status of his registration with the MMC.

“We received a letter from the MMC stating that the CMO isn’t a RMP. So we have issued a show cause notice to Pardeshi to clarify his stand. However, from what we understand, forgetting to renew a licence is not a big offence. It can be done after paying a fine, and the MMC cannot deny renewal, if applied for,” said Zurmure.

When asked about the notice served to him, Pardeshi said, “The matter is now settled. I have got my registration renewed.”
